TN Smokies win over Biscuits
KODAK - Runs were aplenty for the Tennessee Smokies Wednesday afternoon, as Logan Watkins, Jae-Hoon Ha and Jonathan Mota led a 13-hit attack for the Smokies in a 9-5 win over the Montgomery Biscuits. The win, in front of 6,317 fans on “Safe Kids, Health and Awareness Day,” puts the Smokies at 12-15 on the year and evens the series with the Biscuits (11-16).

Tennessee starter Nick Struck allowed run to plate in the first. The Smokies had little trouble with Montgomery starter Jake Thompson (0-2). Watkins and Ha both singled and Watkins would sprint home on Justin Bour’s RBI single. After a Rebel Ridling walk to load the bases, Mota laced a single to center scoring both Ha and Bour to give the Smokies the lead, 3-1.
The Smokies would score another run in the second inning. After an Elliot Soto triple, Jim Adduci brought him in with a sac fly to center to extend Tennessee’s lead to 4-1.
Now leading 4-2 in the third, the Smokies offense answered again. Ha led off with a single, and moved up two bases on an error by Thompson. Two batters later Ridling drove Ha in with a sac fly to center putting the Smokies ahead, 5-2.
The Smokies mounted a two-out rally in the fourth inning. Adduci began the rally with a solo home run to right. Watkins followed with a triple and came around to score on Ha’s RBI single. Justin Bour would cap the fourth inning with a double scoring Ha widening Tennessee’s lead, 8-2.
Mota hit his third home run of the season in the fifth inning to give Tennessee a 9-2 lead. The home run was part of a 3-for-4 day Smokies’ third basemen.
Struck (3-2) would exit the game after 5.1 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while fanning three.
Watkins and Ha each added three hits in the ballgame and each scored at least once in the victory.
Alberto Cabrera closed out the ninth in a non-save situation to secure the win for the Smokies.
Tennessee and Montgomery will face off again on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m. at Smokies Park. RHP Trey McNutt (0-1, 0.61) will start for the Smokies and the Biscuits will counter with RHP Shane Dyer (2-2, 3.43). Thursday is kids eat free; where kids 12-and-under, with paid admission, will receive a free hot dog, bag of chips and small soda.
